Great article by Tom Dusevic on The age-bomb about to detonate in Australia.
People have been raising the alarm since 2000 about 2030 and planning for a healthy ageing population, we failed. Today we have a housing, cost of living and care worker crisis, yet those aged 45+ make up 52% of voters, we need a plan and we need it now. The 45+ are the sandwich generation with kids still at home, at the peak of their careers and with some responsibilities for ageing parents. This is having a huge impact on workforce and with 180,000 Australians retiring in 2030 – have we planned for that? People are working well into their 70s yet we have ageism in the workforce! We need a longevity economy and ecosystem to look at how we age, care, live and retire better in a rich country like Australia. The problem is complex and interconnected financial security, housing security, health and wellbeing and securing care.ASIC is talking about super funds and their obligations to customers whom they know little about. Today around 20% of 60+ are renters – where will they live? Median super for women at 60 is $230k and men $340k – how will that carry them to their 90s? Women over 50 the fastest growing group of homeless and AIHW predicts 400,000 older people homeless by 2030.How do we fix it? – advocacy, media attention, political will and cross sector collaboration, investment in prevention and early intervention- we know people’s health condition, housing status, care responsibilities and assistance needed – the census tells us every 4 years.
We need industry across health funds, super funds and insurance to work together to support customers to make better decisions about finance, housing, and health.
We need industry and government to invest in innovative solutions like United for Care vertical villages for disability and aged care, or My Medic Watch tracking health and prevent falls, Conja an app that measures and analyses spaces for accessibility and falls risks, CARED an app connecting you to specialists around Australia.
